1997
This interpretive study of the teaching and learning of chemistry in an Australian high school examines the beliefs about the nature of science of a teacher and his class in relation to the enacted curriculum. Although the teacher and students tended to see science as an evolving discipline that was uncertain and changed over time, the manner in which the curriculum was implemented was a direct contrast. In the enacted curriculum science was represented as a catalogue of facts to be memorised and as algorithmic solutions to problems. The beliefs that had greatest impact on shaping the curriculum were the teacher‘s beliefs about the nature of student learning, his beliefs about the distribution of power between himself and the students, and the extent to which restraints were accepted by the teacher as reasons for maintaining a traditional approach to teaching and learning chemistry.
More than 100 leading scholars from the global science education community contributed 96 chapters in 11 sections of the Second International Handbook of Science Education, which contains a synthesis of cutting edge research that picks up from where the inaugural Handbook left off. Some sections build from the first Handbook, whereas others address issues that have arisen in the new millennium. Innovative theoretical frameworks, research methods, and research foci are addressed along with new approaches to persistent problems. The sections that comprise the Second International Handbook of Science Education are: sociocultural perspectives and urban education; learning and conceptual change; teacher education and professional development; equity and social justice; assessment and evaluation; curriculum and reform; argumentation and nature of science; out-of-school learning; learning environments; literacy and language; and research methods. Leading scholars in science education present diverse perspectives and robust methods that highlight what we know in a given area, what needs to be done next, and implications for policy and practice. The way in which the Handbook features difference reflects an editorial standpoint that differences are resources for positively transforming science education while at the same time accurately reflecting the potential of science education at the present time.

Abstract
This paper is a report on a scientific revolution in agriculture that has so far largely escaped the notice of the scholarly community. In the late nineteenth century the Caribbean sugar industry was in a state of crisis caused by competition from the subsidized European sugar beet industry and by disease in the naturally occurring varieties of sugar cane. The revolution consisted of breeding disease‐resistant, sucrose‐rich varieties to replace the diseased ones. The cane‐breeding program, based in Barbados, was successful, and was a major factor in enabling the Caribbean sugar industry to evolve into a modern agribusiness. The Introduction to the paper describes the crisis in the sugar cane industry, sets the cane‐breeding program in the context of a “benign kind of agricultural imperialism” that was promoted by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and adopted as policy by the British Colonial Office, and notes that cane breeding was part of a wider interest in the improvement of commercially important plants. The greater part of the paper consists of an examination of (a) the cane‐breeding program in Barbados and (b) the diffusion of the new varieties to other Caribbean islands. The career of John Redman Bovell, who was in charge of the program in Barbados, receives special attention. The paper draws on archival sources as well as on the specialized literature of cane breeders.

The 1831–1836 voyage of H.M.S. Beagle under Captain Robert FitzRoy launched Charles Darwin's entry into the world of geology with two pioneering publications on oceanic islands to his credit. Best known is Darwin's 1842 contribution on the theory of atoll development from the subsidence of volcanic islands and coeval upward growth of coral reefs. This work can be linked, in part, to the ten days during which the Beagle visited the Keeling (Cocos) Islands. The subsequent and lesser known of Darwin's parallel contributions is his 1844 summary on all the volcanic islands visited during the expedition, including Santiago (Cape Verde Islands), Terceira (Azores), St. Paul's Rocks, Fernando Noronha, Ascension, St. Helena, the Galápagos Islands, Tahiti, and Mauritius. Ostensibly, the centerpiece of the 1844 volume is Darwin's extensive coverage of Ascension based on the five days spent there in 1836. However, Darwin had many more days at his disposal in the Galápagos and ‘St. Jago’ (Santiago), where the Beagle stopped in the Cape Verde Islands at the outset and again near the end of the voyage. The volcanic islands where Darwin spent the most time were in the Galápagos (thirty-five days) and the Cape Verdes (twenty-nine days). In particular, those island groups make an interesting comparison with respect to the development of Darwin's ideas on tectonic uplift based on basalt flows with inter-bedded limestone formations. Chance played a huge role in what Darwin saw and did not see during his island travels. The initial visit to the Cape Verde islands was instrumental in shaping Darwin's earliest vision of a book on volcanic islands, but his time there was entirely fortuitous due to a forced change in FitzRoy's plan for a stay in the Canary Islands. Although Darwin was on the look out for limestone formations in the Galápagos islands comparable to those on Santiago in the Cape Verdes, he missed finding them due only to the vagaries of FitzRoy's charting schedule in the Galápagos. This overview looks at limestone distribution in the Cape Verde and Galápagos archipelagos as now understood and speculates on how a wider knowledge of both regions may have influenced Darwin's thinking on global patterns of island uplift and subsidence.
